Checklist

Content: Headings, lists, tables, tags, images, titles, text elements, accessibility check.

The PDF you have created …

  • … is not an image file. (If it is, convert it into a PDF using OCR technology. Please note: this involves a considerable amount of work. Ideally, the PDF should not be an image file in the first place.)
  • … contains headings only if they were created as headings in advance using styles.
  • … contains lists, tables, and other types of content only if they have been marked up as such using styles.
  • … contains tags. (Tags are markers for elements in the document. These markers are usually created automatically if the source document was designed and saved correctly.)
  • … contains images only if they have alt text or are marked as decorative. (Marking images as decorative is optional but should be avoided where possible; ideally, images in the PDF should have alt text.)
  • … has a title and an author. These are included in the PDF metadata.
  • … has no borders around text elements. This applies in particular when creating PDFs from PowerPoint, as text with borders is converted into an image during PDF conversion.
  • … has been checked for accessibility, for example with Adobe Acrobat Pro or PAC 3.
