Contents: The importance of clear course titles; guidance on implementation.

Why is clear labelling important?

Navigating ILIAS can be a challenge for students. In particular, finding courses via the magazine is seen as a barrier. In the student survey conducted by SHUFFLE (2022), respondents cited, amongst other things, the "confusing, complicated design" and navigation as barriers when using ILIAS.

As a lecturer, you can support students by giving your course a clear, standardised name.

How do you name your course?

Via LSF (or HisInOne), your course is assigned a course code consisting of letters and numbers. As students are also aware of this code or can view it, it should be included for the sake of clarity.

The following naming convention is recommended for courses:

  • Course code: “Name of the course. Type of course (name of the lecturer).”
  • Fictitious example: “AAB 023: Digital Accessibility in Higher Education. Seminar (Kalemba).”

If you wish to provide further information about the course, this should be included in the course description.

Course description

You can find the description under the ‘Settings’ tab. You can add further information in the "Description" text field (see Fig. 1). This information will be displayed in the course overview in the magazine.

However, use additional information sparingly, as it may otherwise seem overwhelming.
