Accessible toilet, Eurokey, toilet facilities

Accessible toilets are specially designed sanitary facilities that enable people with physical disabilities to use them safely and independently. They feature handrails, wheelchair-accessible washbasins, non-slip floors and sufficient space for wheelchairs to manoeuvre. A central access system for such toilets is the Eurokey. This was developed in 1986 by the Club Behinderter und ihrer Freunde in Darmstadt und Umgebung e. V. and gives authorised users access to over 12,000 accessible toilet facilities across Europe. The key protects the facilities from vandalism and ensures better hygiene and availability. Those eligible to obtain it are people with specific codes on their severe disability card or with a medical certificate in the case of chronic illnesses.
