Surtitles

Surtitles are text overlays that reproduce spoken or sung content in another language or in written form. They are often displayed above the stage, screen or projection – for example, in operas, theatre performances, lectures or at multilingual events.

Explanation: In the context of accessibility, surtitles serve to facilitate access to content for people with hearing impairments, limited language skills or cognitive impairments. They may contain translations, transcriptions or summaries of the content. Unlike subtitles, which are usually displayed at the bottom of the screen (e.g. in films), surtitles are spatially separate from the actual action and require active attention.
