Sign language

German Sign Language is a visual-manual language with its own grammar, used primarily by deaf people for communication. It is based on hand movements (signs), facial expressions and body language, and is a fully-fledged and independent language in its own right, rather than merely a translation of spoken language. German Sign Language has been recognised as a language throughout Germany since 2002 under the Disability Equality Act (BGG). There are well over 100 different sign languages worldwide.
