Readability

Readability refers to the linguistic comprehensibility of a text, that is, how easily and fluently a text can be taken in, processed and understood. It depends on factors such as word choice, sentence structure, text length, structure, organisation, style and the use of technical terms.

Unlike legibility, which refers to the visual recognisability of characters and text layout, readability describes the content and linguistic aspects. A text with high readability, for example, uses short sentences, active voice, clear structures and language tailored to the target audience.

Readability is important for people with cognitive impairments, limited language skills or learning difficulties, as it facilitates access to information. Tools such as plain language or simple language specifically enhance readability.
