Low-stimulus environment

A low-stimulus environment is a deliberately designed space that contains as few sensory stimuli as possible, such as noise, bright light, intense colours or strong odours. The aim is to protect people from overstimulation and to enable them to find peace, concentration and emotional stability. A low-stimulus environment can be particularly helpful for highly sensitive individuals, people on the autism spectrum, those with ADHD, or those going through stressful periods in their lives, as it helps to avoid sensory overload and promotes cognitive recovery. Typical features include clear structures, muted colours, natural materials and calm acoustics. At Bielefeld University, the Theresia Degener Room at the ZAB (UHG B1-241) is available to students who require a low-stimulus working environment. It is equipped with partition walls to reduce noise and is intended exclusively for individual, quiet study.
