Self-determination

For people with disabilities, self-determination is of central importance because it implies the right and the ability to make autonomous decisions about one’s own life. This includes having adequate choices in shaping their daily lives, choosing where to live, their work and education, as well as their social relationships. Historically, people with disabilities have often been treated as if they lacked the capacity to make their own decisions. Self-determination is therefore crucial for dignity, independence and equal participation in society.
