Crip

The word ‘crip’ is derived from the English term ‘cripple’, which means ‘cripple’ in German. Originally a derogatory term, it has been deliberately reclaimed by many disabled people. Today, they use it as a symbol of self-empowerment and resistance against discriminatory labels imposed by others.

The term is also used in the arts and academia – for example, in what is known as Crip Theory. In this context, it represents a self-determined, activist engagement with disability, identity and social norms.
