Autistic Joy
‘Autistic joy’ describes the all-encompassing, very intense feeling of joy and excitement that many autistic people experience. This can relate to things that seem insignificant to other people (but are definitely not insignificant!). This feeling can be very intense and course through the whole body. Autistic people often express this feeling through stimming. Stimming is an adaptive mechanism that helps autistic people to self-regulate and to calm or communicate intense emotions or thoughts. Autistic people often experience emotions more intensely than non-autistic people.
